GMS was invited to
sponsor the 2010
Australian Sudoku
Championships, which was
held in Perth on Friday
11 June, the day before
the rugby union test
match between the
Wallabies and England.
The Australian Sudoku Championships
was a follow-up to the
Third Sudoku World
Championships which was
held in Goa, India in
2008.
The Australian
team was made up of
“past their prime” UWA
Rugby Club players, who
were extremely proud to
represent their country
in Sudoku having never
been selected to play
rugby for the Wallabies. .
After the momentous occasion in
2008, Mick Colliss,
poet, sport commentator
and Vice-Captain of the
Numbats (as the national
team was called) wrote a
book titled “Full
Contact Sudoku”, which
was further supported by
a documentary “Colours
by Numbers” on the ABC.
As a result of
this exposure, Sudoku
became a big hit in
Australian rugby
circles. .
After an attempt to send a team to
the 2010 World Sudoku
Championships in
Philadelphia
in April did not
materialise, it was
decided to hold an
Australian “State
against State” contest,
made up of a select
field of past rugby
legends, including three
Wallabies, representing
Queensland, New South
Wales and WA.
